A Day Off In May... In Search of Snow...

Things are looking quite green in New Castle...
About 5mn out of town I spot fresh snow in the hills...

Another 5mn passes and I get the feeling the recent 80 degree weather has done its job.

This is West Elk Reservoir, it was about 38 degrees here.

15mn from New Castle... ahhh... now things are turning bit whiter.

25mn passed and I'm hiking to the drop in...

Unpacking and ready to go!

A brief stop for a breath of fresh air... all those clouds earlier? I'm above them now.
You can barely see the line I came down on. Now I need to hike out...

2 hours later, and back below the clouds.

Back to New Castle.

Garden of the Gods

I went to a music conference in Colorado Springs last weekend. Early in the morning I went for a walk in the "Garden of the God's Park" as the sun came up... here's what I saw....

ESPN Winter XGames Day

We decided to hike for our own x games experience before the real x games. We had a good time finding some nice runs and hiking back up. Callie is taking on the backcountry in good spirits, though the deep powder gets the best of her!

Here we are hiking out after a nice little 800ft descent

The X-Games were great, these guys get some serious airtime.

Callie and Heidi in the X getups.

There's Shaun White

again...

14 feet above the pipe... He won.

Xtra Double Black....

a huge cornice is the gateway to these runs... yowsers! Not to mention the 60 mph gusts of wind!

The famous T-bar at Breck

This video is taken from right where the red post with the flag on it points too. It was a super chunky rough ride... that crazy wind really packs the powder into some tough stuff.

another weekend

Went to Breckenridge on Sat., forgot the camera, and thats ok the temp was about -20 windchill above the treeline with very heavy winds. We ended up snowboarding half the day and snowshoeing a short trail in Breck the rest of the day. Good times.

Here's some pics from Sunday doing some snowshoeing and snowboarding up West Elk near town here. I decided to bring the board and hike up and down a bit, a lot of work, but some fantastic untouched powder to ride.
Callie, Heidi, and Kenya are all in this pic somewhere...

New Castle & Sunlight - Jan. 12-13

The snow just keeps falling, it's getting closer and closer to town now. We have about a foot in New Castle and it gets deeper by the feet as we head up in elevation.

Here's a few pics of snowshoeing up East Elk Creek (this was our closest escape from the heat in August, and a good place to catch trout, now it is our closest DEEP snow to play in... it's about 6 miles up a canyon out of town)
Callie's runnin' in her new snowshoes!

It's crazy... the snow just appears and snows super hard. We can see the blue sky above the snow.... hmm.....

Callie got hungry for frosted cupcakes after seeing the snow covered rocks in the creek.Look at the reflective hat!
As the sun started to go down the low reflecting light made a spectacular scene in the background.!

Heidi and Callie at Sunlight Mt. in Glenwood, this small town resort is about 25 miles from our house. Lots of good stuff at this little gem... in the background is Mt. Sopris, and the Aspen-Snowmass wilderness.

here's Callie cruisn' an easy green run...

a few fun pics of us messing around in the powder
